I find that most recording artists working on a first release are pretty indecisive about the production sound they want. They may start out with a reference song or album but when it comes down to committing to a direction, they struggle.
Engineers and producers who have seen this play out many times speculate that such artists are either (wanting to realize every idea simultaneously) too ambitious or (needing to win the world over on day one) profoundly unrealistic.
I often remind my clients that they need to start somewhere. The production quality does (or should) matter but some successful artists drop mediocre productions and get away with it because they are consistent and know how to engage with their fans.
I’m reminded of a quote I often hear my business manager say: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” So, even if you release the perfect first album, EP or single, you still need to stay consistent in doing the work if you want a career in music.
